They’re only words …???

What a great way to start the New Year.

No, not the cold and additional snow.

But, the Sunday morning chance to sit and read…to revel in the power of the well-written word. The memorable twist of phrase. The vague concept, suddenly vibrant and visible.

Consider:

“To let this question fill the free space between deadlines in my life…” Ellen Goodman on her retirement (or, time to let herself go).

“…a little bit of hope–not the whispy stuff, but battle-hardened hope, forged in the grim, purposeful spirit of the times.” Bono, from his 10 ideas for the next 10 years.

“…emergence of a whole new cache of them: some just catching on and some that …should be cashed-out…” Ron Rosenbaum on catchphrases.

They are only words.

But they don’t always work the same, do they?

Here’s to making words work well in 2010!
