Stacey Million, Assistant Director of Philanthropic Giving at Children’s Mercy Hospital, joins M&C Nonprofit Marketing Talk for an enlightening conversation on all things planned giving.

As an English major, Stacey got her start in advertising and marketing. She later served as the Executive Director of Designing Women, a nonprofit organization in southeast Missouri. Stacey’s career path then led her to Starlight Theatre, managing their young professionals’ group, and later to the Kansas City Heart Ball as the Senior Director of Development at the American Heart Association.

Stacey serves on the board of Mid-America Charitable Gift Planners (MACGP) as chairperson of their 24th Annual Building Blocks Conference, planned for September 20, 2019.

Our favorite takeaways from this podcast conversation:

  • Relationship-building skills are key, along with compassion and devotion. Technical skills & knowledge of planned giving can be taught, but these core values are inherent.

  • Being likeable, trustworthy and engaging are important to succeeding as a planned giving professional.

  • Fulfill your donors by connecting their philanthropic vision with your organization and help them answer the question, “What do you want your legacy to be?”

  • Trends worth paying attention to include an increase in blended gifts, the need for an exceptionally strong donor stewardship plan and increasing monthly donors, which in turn increases planned giving prospects.

  • The key to success as a planned giving professional is connecting with groups like MACGP early and often. They are dedicated to helping fellow development professionals and their organizations be successful.
